24-Hr Holter Monitoring

A Holter monitor is a small, battery-powered medical device that measures a patient’s heart activity, such as rate and rhythm, for 24 hours, to monitor the functioning of the heart over a period of time. Holter monitor testing is also called ambulatory electrocardiography. The patient is required to wear the Holter monitor for 12 to 48 hours as they go about their daily routine.

This device is almost like a regular ECG with electrodes and electrical leads, just fewer leads. It can not only pick up heart rate and rhythm, but can also pick up changes during chest pains like irregular heartbeat or arrhythmia. The recordings can help the doctor determine if the patient’s heart is getting enough oxygen or if the electrical impulses in the heart are delayed or early.

How is it performed?

The leads of the Holter monitor are placed on the chest with a glue-like gel. The metal electrodes conduct the heart’s activity through the wires and into the Holter monitor, where it is recorded.
The monitor is hung from the patient’s neck in a small pouch. It’s important to keep the monitor close to the body during the testing period to make sure the readings are accurate.
The technologist will explain how to take care of the monitor and how to remove it and reconnect it whenever necessary.
The patient will be directed to maintain a record of their activities while wearing the Holter monitor. This will help the doctor determine if changes in heart activity are related to the patient’s behaviour and movements.
After 24-48 hours of monitoring, the results recorded by the monitor will be analysed by the cardiologist and a diagnosis will be made.
